Recap & Gallery: York9 FC vs. Cavalry FC (June 26, 2019)

It was a beautiful Wednesday night in Toronto that quickly soured for York9 FC. Cavalry FC flew into town with the knowledge that a win against York would surely mean a first place finish in the Spring Season.

The first half started with both teams exchanging chances. Nathan Ingham and Marco Carducci came up a big on a few occasions for both sides, but it was Dominique Malonga in the 24th minute that broke the deadlock. From the top of the box he let go a monstrous strike which left Ingham with no chance to keep it out.

Julian Buscher doubled the lead 10 minutes later from a well-worked free kick. Buscher caught Ingham going the wrong way and the ball nestled inside the left post.

The one battle to watch this entire match was on the wings with Nico Pasquotti and Diyaeddine Abzi. Both players are supremely athletic, tricky, and compete for every ball. If you’re looking for a reason to watch the Canadian Premier League, this battle is a great example. Abzi has been a standout player for York9 all year holding down that left back position and Pasquotti has been tormenting defenses with his mazey runs down the right wing. Don’t be surprised if you hear both of these names moving on to USL or MLS clubs in the near future.

The second half came and went with York9 causing no real issues for Marco Carducci in the Cavalry goal, but there was one bright side for the Nine Stripes. Roger Thompson was substituted on to start the second half for his debut, and this signaled the first time this season that York9 has had their two top centre backs in the same team. Considering how well York9 has done defensively this season (thanks to both Luca Gasparotto and the emergence of Daniel Gogarty), the addition of Thompson is like a new signing for the start of the Fall Season. Thompson is a big, strong defender who is quite mobile for a man of his size. He’ll win balls in the air but also has the footballing mind to intercept passes. Both him and Gasparotto are prototypical centrebacks for this York9 squad, and the partnership between them should prove to be a great benefit for the Nine Stripes.

Final Score: York9 0 – 2 Cavalry
